The federal income tax exemption for federally-charted credit unions allows us to offer you competitive loan and deposit rates, lower or non-existent fees, and various free financial services. Unfortunately, Congress may leverage a new tax on all credit unions, including Chaffey FCU, to pay for the extension of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).
The assertion that credit unions “don't pay taxes” is false. While we don’t pay federal income tax, credit unions do pay property, payroll, business license fees, and (for state-chartered credit unions) sales tax. Removing the current federal tax exempt status will negatively impact the low rates, limited fees, and free services from Credit Unions across the country; but, will only minimally contribute to the national budget.
