Can I open an account as an International Student without a Social Security Number?

  • Yes! Chaffey FCU welcomes International Students to open a checking and savings account with us, however, other services may be limited. Please see the required documentation below.
  • A Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is required to open other interest bearing deposit accounts or apply for loans.

What documents do I need to open a Chaffey FCU Membership as an International Student?

  • Enrollment Verification Letter from your college
  • I-20 Form issued by the Department of Homeland Security
  • Valid passport with photo from home country
  • A second form of photo ID (College Photo ID accepted)
  • W8-BEN (Chaffey FCU can also provide this form for students to complete at their appointment)

What is the minimum age required to open an International Student account?

  • To open their own Chaffey FCU account, International Students must be at least 18 years of age.

Do I need to visit a branch in-person to open my Membership?

  • Yes. Due to the required forms, International Students need to open their Membership in-person. Our team can assist you virtually in the future once your account is opened.

Can I apply for a loan?

  • You must have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to open a loan. You must also be able to provide proof of income and qualify under standard Chaffey FCU loan underwriting criteria.

Can I get a debit card?

  • Yes! You can have a debit card with a Checking Account.
  • You will also be able to add your debit card to your digital wallet to use on your smart devices.

Will I have access to Zelle?

  • Yes, you can send and receive funds through Zelle with a Chaffey FCU checking account. Accounts must be open for at least 90 days and be in good standing for Zelle to be available.

Will I have access to Online Banking?

  • Yes, you can access your accounts at any time virtually through our Online Banking portal and/or Mobile App. To initially enroll in online banking, International Students must complete this process with a Chaffey FCU Representative at a branch. This can be done at the same time you open your Chaffey FCU account.

Can I enroll in Courtesy Pay?

  • At this time, International Student accounts are not eligible for Courtesy Pay.

Can I add a Joint account holder to my account?

  • No, Joint account holders are not permitted on International Student accounts.

Will I be able to keep my Chaffey FCU account if I do not renew my Visa or obtain a Work Permit and/or Social Security Number?

  • In the event your Visa expires and you have not obtained a Work Permit or Social Security Number (SSN), your account will be closed. You will have the option to withdraw your funds as cash or as a cashiers check.
