Equifax - Data Breach!

The consumer credit reporting agency, Equifax Inc., has confirmed that approximately 143 million U.S. consumers were affected by a data breach that occurred from mid-May through July 2017. We’re happy to share with you that the breach is now contained.

To find out more about the Equifax compromise and to find out if you were impacted, you can visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) site at ftc.gov/idtheft/. Equifax also has a dedicated group to provide additional information on steps you can take to protect your personal information. You may contact them at https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/ or call them toll-free at 866-447-7559. Their call center is open 7 days a week from 7am to 1am Eastern Time.

We’d like to recommend if you currently have not set up a ‘Password’ on your Chaffey FCU account, now is the time to do so! Also, remember you have the option to block your debit and/or credit cards using our Free Mobile App. And don’t forget you can receive a Free Credit Report once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com.

As always, our members are our top priority! If you see something that you did not authorize, contact us immediately at (909) 986-4552 or (626) 968-9329 extension 4 and speak to a credit union representative. You are not responsible for any unauthorized charges.

Tax Scams/Consumer Alerts

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! In recent years, thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal information to tax scams and fake IRS communication.

REMEMBER: The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. The IRS will not:

  • Call you to demand immediate payment. The IRS will not call you if you owe taxes without first sending you a bill in the mail.
  • Demand that you pay taxes and not allow you to question or appeal the amount that you owe.
  • Require that you pay your taxes a certain way. For instance, require that you pay with a prepaid debit card.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  • Threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you for not paying.

Being able to recognize these tell-tale signs of a phishing or tax scam could save you from becoming a victim.

The information above was acquired on the IRS website. For additional details and more information about Tax Scams and Tax Tips, log onto the IRS website at www.irs.gov.
